After switching on, my desktop appears but is immediately
covered by a MSINFO folder window which I have to delete
before accessing my desktop again.
Appreciate help.

Billy,
Does this folder appear every time you re-boot regardless of the
deletion of the desktop file?

Type "MSINFO32.EXE" (or) "MSINFO.EXE" (depending on O/S)
(no quotes) from your [Run > Dialog] box > that will enable your System
Information Module, let it load normally, then exit in a normal fashion.

Hope this helps, please post back in this thread with your findings/results.
