Couple things: (this may be too basic, but I couldn't tell from your
post)
For using MSI packages on RT images:
1. make sure that you have the "Windows Installer Service" component
added
to your image.
2. if you are using WMI to do your installs make sure you have the "WMI
Windows Installer Provider" component included
Windows Update is not allowed in XPE... there are too many variants of
image
types for the automated system to determine your configuration... also
it's
a license violation... you can go to
https://microsoft.embeddedoem.com
and
get QFE's for XPE (Componetized) and if you have the Desktop QFE
installer
included in your RT, you can apply standade Windows XP QFE's to your RT
image... (NOT via Windows Update)
