Msiexec.exe using 100% of CPU

Following an attempted installation of an HP all-in-one printer. The file msiexec.exe will not close and
the process continuous uses almost 100% of the CPU. Have just about exhausted myself reading help files and talking to HP, who says it is windows problem. Running XP Pro with all updates.

Can any one offer any solutions other than disable the msiexec process, which windows says will cause all kinds of problems?
