hi there,

i was on vacation and some ppl, sat down at my pc surfing
the www. They got off the line and got some links to
sites they shouldn't have gone to.

Due to this a script/prgramm had manipulated the registry
and thus every time i wanted to visit a page it had benn
redirected over a foreign server. And i had nasty pop-ups
etc.

Well i edited the registry and got it done, so that there
are no routings anymore and the popups stopped.

in the rush i forgot to make a backup of my r. As a
matter of fact, while modifying/deleting some keysi now
habe to type the EXACT url i want to visit.

Before (everybody can confirm) i could type google.com
and i woul dhave reached http://www.google.com. But know
i don't.

anyone could search her/his regisrty for that option?
Or anyone knows the key/value needed to restoore that
behaviour?

thanks in advance
rob

Hi,

I too am experiencing the same EXACT issue that you are.
I need to type "http://" before the web address or the
site won't be found. I spent 2.5 hours this afternoon on
the phone with Trent in MS tech support. We looked at
everything on my system, updating files, running virus
checks (nothing found), ad-ware's spy checks (found 8
items and deleted them), etc.

After looking at entries and files, we found that
CoolWebSearch.com installed itself on my pc while I was
surfing the Internet one day. It seems that
CoolWebSearch has updated my registry in a way that can't
simply be undone...and I don't want to reinstall my XP
operating system!!!

Trent in TS, has forwarded my issue to their research
group. They should be contacting me in a few days to go
over what's happening and hopefully find a work around.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that there are
other people experiencing this issue...can't update the
registry or install IE service packs.....Hopefully MS
will figure out a way to clean the registry and resolve
this issue. Feel free to email me for more information.

Good luck!

If MS support had used Google Group search they would have found an
immediate answer.

Thanks to all who helped out.
It was really a pain. I now got a tool which done that
job for me and repaired those entries.

Too bad that the "Repair" option doesn't care about that
stuff.

Those keys, Henri were the ones i've been lokking for.
