MSIE does not start. It fails with following error:

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."

Error Signature"
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: mshtml.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2963 Offset: 0020219b

Cleared cache, temporary files etc and it did not help. MSIE was working up
until a few days back. I suspect the latest windows security updates of last
week introduced this issue.

Please help.

Thanks

Look in Add/Remove Programs for that date that "Security Update for Windows
XP (KB918899)" was installed. Does it correspond to the time the problems
started?

Thanks for your response. KB918899 was installed recently and it may
correspond to the time when problem started. When trying to uninstall
KB918899, it warns me with some message like follows:

"If KB918899 is removed, these programs might not run properly. Do you want
to continue?"

And the list of programs contains the following 3 security updates:
KB920214, KB921398, KB922616.

Is it safe to ignore above message and continue the uninstall of KB918899?

Thanks
MKAP

NB: In my first post, I did NOT suggest that you uninstall 918899!

There have been "issues" with this update, but mainly in WinXP SP1 and Win2K
SP4. This is not to say that those runninf WinXP SP2 haven't experienced
issues as well.

Here's what I would do if I were you (these are WinXP SP2-specific
instructions):

1. Uninstall 918899 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot /twice/.

2. Download the update from the Download Center; save it to your desktop, do
NOT run it!
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=CDB85BCA-0C17-44AA-B74E-F01B5392BB31

3. Physically disconnect from the internet, disable your anti-virus
application and any anti-spyware applications (e.g., SpySweeper, Spybot Tea
Timer, Ewido's GUARD.EXE (via Task Manager > Processes, if necessary);

4. Double-click on the saved file to install it. Follow all prompts.

Let us know if the problem(s) persist.

I have seen similar issues with 918899 on Windows 2k and its still
unresolved. Its definitely related to this patch update.

After a long wait with MS product support, a hotfix against KB918899 is
now available through Microsoft Product Support (and given it is a
product issue it should be deemed free, but don't quote me).

KB article 926996, Fix numbers 187899 and 187898 for server and client.

I have been told the release via Windows Update will occur as part of a
cumulative update in October.
