Hi,

I just got a new mobo for my sister, an MSI KT4V MS-6712 to be precise.
Before buying any RAM for it I decided to get it up and running first.
However, although it says it will run using any PC1600/2100/2700/3200 I
can't get it to boot up with either of my 256Mb PC2700 modules.

It has a fancy LED thingy on the back that tells me it is halting at the
"Memory Detection Test" which is useful. This means that the memory
module is "damaged or not installed correctly" apparently. Anyway, both
modules that I tried work fine in my machine, and the mobo can detect
something because it starts beeping if there is no RAM, and doesn't beep
when I put either of these in.

I've tried them in all sockets and it just won't boot! Is it possible
that PC2700 ram won't work with an Athlon 800? Is it too fast or will
it work ok with a slower processor? (Mine is an XP1800). Do I need to
carefully buy some new ram that is better matched to it? Where do I
start? The website only says that you need RAM from a specified
manufacturer if you're using the PC3200 type, and google didn't turn up
anything useful.

Many thanks,

Scott

Just to add to my own post, the two memory modules I tried are actually
identical, just in different packages.

They are Samsung modules, PC2700U-2533-700 if that means anything to
anyone, I guess the U is for unbuffered. These should work shouldn't
they? Crucial has the mobo in their list and recommends their ones that
seem identical, will they really work if I order them?
