mshtml.dll problem

Guest

I get the error"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close.
Sorry for the inconvenience" when trying to go to certain url's. For
instance, Hotmail.com and Internet Explorer home page on microsoft.com. In
the windows that open, the error is caused by an mshtml.dll fil.
Checking the knowledge base I find only references to older versions of IE
and other programs.
Does anyone have a solution?
Thank You

Thank you for your help Mr. Sanders but, unfortunately, those ideas did not
help. I forgot to mention I am running Windsows XP with SP2. I have a screen
shot of the original error message and one of the expanded error message. If
this will help I can send it to you. This format does not allow images in the
message.

Additionally Mr. Saunders, when I have tried to download IE6, I get a message
that a newer version already exists on my computer and setup will not
continue. Also, this problem began to occur after I downloaded an Active X
file from microsoft. Unfortunately, I don't remember when or what exactly it
was.

Are there other options that might be less volatile? XP SP2 came on the
installation CD for XP. Wouldn't more problems be created by uninstalling
SP2? Please tell me there is a better way to fix IE 6!!!
Thank You

Frank Saunders YOU are a genius. That worked great. Now, when I attempted to
open Outllook 2000 to check my e-mail before I read your reply, I get this
cute message: Outlook requires Outllook Express 4.01 or greater....What's up
with this now?
Thanks again. Your advice really helped me.

Outlook uses Outlook Express (retitled as "Outlook News Reader") to read
newsgroups (like this one). Outlook 2000 should have installed a version of
OE5 when Outlook was installed.
