Even though I'm using Windows XP Pro there appears no way to change this
domain. IE when I enter ping xpc I got pinging xpc.lan. However when I enter
ping -a 192.168.1.2 I get pinging xpc.mshome.net. I've looked both under
computer properties - name (unlike 98 puts this in a different place) and
under Local Area Network Properties

The problem I have is the 98 PC's can't connect to the file and printers on
the XP PC. Everything else is fine:
Internet even through proxy server is fine
XP PC can connect to shared folders hosted by the 98 PC
The 98 PC can see the XP PC name in explorer but when I try to view the
shared folders I get a password request for \\xpc\ipc$. Then am told te
password I entered is incorrect.

Passwords (must have them unless registry is changed on XP) and user names
are the same
All firewalls disabled.

I don't think that the DNS domain name has anything to do with the
problem. A Windows 98/XP network uses NetBIOS over TCP/IP, not DNS,
to locate other computers.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP Pro to fully enable file sharing.
If the IPC$ prompt still occurs after that, it means that XP Pro
doesn't recognize the user name and password of the user on the 98 PC.

Exactly the problem (Ran the wizard and quad chcked all the settings) - why
does XP not recognise the username and password even though I use it on two
XP PC's?
