Can anybody tell me what I've missed?

I have two pc's - a desktop which holds my DSL modem and
a laptop. I link them using a 4 port hub. At least I
try to: Neither can find the "mshome" workgoup.

The laptop can share the dsl connection, so I know the
actual cables and hub are working, but I can't ping the
desktop (192.168.0.1) from the laptop successfully.
However i can ping the laptop from the desktop.
I've run the networing wizard countless times - I've
uninstalled and reinstalled the networking client, file &
printer sharing etc, several times.
Curiously, when I run the "add a printer" wizard on the
laptop, IT can find MSHOME and the desktop machine, but
then can't find a printer.

In summary then - my home network allows internet
sharing, but neither computer can see the other in "view
workgoup computers", so I can't transfer files from one
to the other.

I'm hoping someone can help before I completely run out
of hair...

Hi, Allan -

Can you check the XP machines and make sure the Internet
Connection Firewall is disabled on the LAN connection on
both machines? The firewall will prevent the machines
from seeing each other in a workgroup.

.
This is not going to help you, I admit, but I have
experienced a similar problem, not just with MSHOME, but
also with other names for my workgroup. My machine tells
me to contact the administrator, but that's me!

I hear you on this one my friend - your problem sounds
exactly like mine, right down to which PC can ping and
which one can't. My laptop is XP Home. My desktop WAS
Win98, and file/printer sharing worked great. Then we
upgraded WIN 98 to XP Pro, and things haven't worked
since. All I hear about are the blasted firewalls - well
I made sure they were disabled and it still doesn't
work. The machines share an Internet connection just
fine - no squabbling. My laptop can find the workgroup
and see the XP Pro PC, but when I click on the XP pro PC,
all I get are messages about not having permission to use
the network resource. I also made sure I was logged on
to the same account on both machines, which has to be the
stupidest thing I've ever heard - what about the other
people who want to use the PC? Do they have to wait
until I am finished? Moot issue, really, because it
didn't work either. I checked the knowledge base but I
couldn't find anything. I am thoroughly disgusted - why
can't they make their own software work together and play
nice? At least I know I'm not the only one.
