I just installed the latest Windows XP update from MS, on
both my desktop and my laptop (both running Windows XP
Pro SP1). Everything worked fine on my desktop, but when
my laptop rebooted, the boot sequence ground to a halt
with "The logon user interface DLL msgina.dll system
failed to load". I had to reboot using "last known good
configuration" to be able to get it working again, and
just to be safe I also did a system restore to just
before the update had installed.
However, when Windows Update ran again, this time as well
as the latest update it also found about a dozen updates
that I had previously installed, which I guess had
been "lost" when I rebooted using the last known good
configuration (though I'm not sure why as some of them
were quite old). I let it install these updates, but on
rebooting I'm back to the old "msgina.dll" message again.
There is an article in the MS Knowledge Base that covers
a similar problem for Windows 2000 SP3, but I'm reluctant
to try this in case it doesn't work with XP and I make
matters worse.
Anybody else experienced similar problems or know how to
overcome this?
I'm afraid I don't recall what the update actually was -
except that my Windows Update first detected it on 14 Jan
04, so I guess that it must have been published just
before then.
