Hi, does anyone know how to get Windows XP Explorer to
search the content of Outlook Message Format files
(*.msg). Previous versions of windows allowed this and I
know that you can now use Indexing service/ query
catalogue, although I understand the benefits of using
this method it is not an option for my users at the
moment. If you try searching for text within msg files
explorer does not search the files, it just ignores them.
We have thousands of *.msg files on our servers which
need to be searched using WIndows explorer content search
as previously done. I am currently updating our systems
and would appreciate any help.
Thanks
Bob

No you can't and I doubt it ever worked. Msg-files aren't stored in Plain
Text. Eml-files are though (Outlook Express)

Hi,

I know the .msg files are not stored in plain text,
although you can open them with a plain text editor and
see the body of your message. Up to (and including)
windows 2000 the .msg files can be searched for content.
I guess the 'readable text' is what was searchable.

I have just tried this out on one of our servers (windows
2000) and it works fine through windows explorer search
files containing text....

Thanks for your input anyway..

Regards
Bob

I just reproduced it (never had to use it before :-D). Still this isn't an
Outlook issue but is a problem with the Search functionality in Windows XP
so I suggest you repost your issue in a Windows XP newsgroup. You might want
to state that you already posted here and refer to me (as an MVP) so you
don't get send back to this newsgroup.

Good Luck!
