For what it's worth
I was having trouble getting Access 2002(10.6501.6626) SP3 to update a table linked from Excel (same version)
I whittled down the problem to the following scenario
1. Create a new blank Access databas
2. Create a table in Design Vie
3. Add Field1 Type Yes/N
4. Save the table without creating an inde
5. Export Table1 to My Documents with type Excel 97-2002 (*.xls
6. Rename Table1 as Table1
7. Get external data->link table
8. Specify Table1.xls, indicate that it has a header, and Finis
9. Open (Linked) Table
10. Type a character (best as I can tell, any character although I haven't tried them all
On my PC (running ME) this is sufficient to make Microsoft sorry for the inconvenienc
and to make me wonder if they have truly worked out the interoperational details the
seem so fond of promoting (I apologize in advance for the miniflame but I am frustrated.)

Re-installing Office sometimes seems to be the only fix for problems like
this.

But you might as well try to install Jet service pak 7 or 8 first: I see
from your message that you are still on service pak 6, and just the
process of doing the upgrade may fix it.

How can you tell? According to KB 239114, the latest version of Jet for Windows M
is SP7. And the level it lists for SP7 is what I show. What am I missing

I'm using 4.0.8618, from SP8. The SP8 version was not initially available
for Win98 or Win2K.

I incorrectly assumed that there was a .7 version with SP7, but I see that
I was wrong. I incorrectly assumed that since SP8 is now available for
Win98
and Win2K, it would also be available for WinME. I see that I was wrong....

In fact, I guess you are way ahead of me already.....

Anyway, until I get back to test on Win98ME, possibly in about a fortnight,
I can only suggest that you delete MSECL40.dll (if you can defeat the file
protection) and try re-installing it.
