The Vista RC1 has not yet been put up on MSDN, which seems wrong to me.
But will the MSDN keys work with the public download that is already
available? Are the downloads in fact exactly the same?

David Wilkinson

I am sort of surprised the download for CPP users came today.
Especially, before MSDN.

Although, since the emails have not been sent out, it is not
official. But, I'm sure Microsoft knew there were folks checking
the download link constantly and would beat any email notification.
Probably, done on purpose.

They know. They know folks keep a browser window up and just keep
refreshing.

But will the MSDN keys work with the public download? I have downloaded
both the files (it went pretty fast!), and the hashes were good, but I
won't waste DVD's if the MSDN keys won't work. Or are all downloads of a
given build exactly the same?

David Wilkinson

I know how you don't want to waste a DVD so its up to you whether or not to
try it. I can't recall if I have ever crossed my MSDN keys with other
media, but the MSDN key, like the CPP key, is classed as Retail
(transferrable to another computer) so it might be fine. What I do know is
that you can not cross OEM keys with Retail media and vice versa.

I don't know if it will work with RC-1. With Beta 2 I used a MSDN key with a
DVD that I received at a Microsoft event.

Thanks Colin:

OK, so I burned Vista RC1 x64 from the public download and it accepted
the MSDN Vista Ultimate key. So I guess it is OK ...
