Hi,

i wanted to update my MSDE with teh latest service pack.
I have been told to

Look for the existing MSDE 2000 instance name in the
following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\ID_Number

the problem is i have no idea how to locate this. can
anyone point me in the right direction?

thx

Start->Run "regedit"
Click in the left pane and then press home (so you wind up at the top
level), click your way down to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products, at that
point you will have a number of folders with numbers as their names, just
look (or search) into each folder and read the "ProductName" variable, one
of them says "Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine" or something like that.
Thats the correct one.

Just be very certain you dont change any names of variables or the values..
You might be forced to restart your computer if you do (any changes you make
are instantanous, if you feel uncomfortable about that I suggest you check
for the version number somewhere else)

Hope it helps
/Dan
