Does someone know of a good website or some other source, that may have a
list of files that may get in the astart menu? I had a site at one time and
it gace a list of files and what they were and were they came from. I know i
will not be able to find every file, but any i can find would be good. Some
files are self explanitory, but some arent....thanks

First off, instead of using msconfig to disable startup items
you might want to use a program such as the standalone version
of Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel:

Startup Control Panel
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Here are a few sources for information about startup entries:

Task List Programs
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Startup Applications List
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Download the entire list here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php#THE_PROGRAMS

If you come across any items which are not listed on any of
these sources, try searching Google for any info.

Good luck

1. Castlecops Startup List
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html

2. (better, IMHO) Get free "Autoruns" at
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml
and run it. Right-click on anything you're suspicious about and
select "Google".

What is the advantage or using a standalone program. I dont want to remove
all of the programs, just disable them from startup....thanks

Call it a personal preference but I like to restrict my use of
msconfig to that of a troubleshooting tool.

Whenever I want to disable an item listed on the Startup tab of
msconfig I'll first look for an option within the program
itself to prevent its loading at startup. If that's not
possible, I'll edit the registry directly. Using the program I
suggested yields the same results as editing the registry but
is a lot simpler to use. It also includes the ability to
quickly add back any items that were disabled.
