msconfig shows that it is starting something called "support for 16-bit
apps". I don't recall installing any older 16bit apps. Can I just shut it
off? Also, where can you find information on the myriad of services that
are automatically started each time you log in? My login time is now quite
slow after having installed and de-installed many programs.

Don't worry about it. It's
a/ not starting it
b/ it is started if a 16 bit apps starts.

Ignore thoose tabs unless 16 bit apps aren't working.
