Does anyone know how to remove items that show up in
msconfig that are no longer needed.

Best way: Open the program and look through its 'preferences' or 'options'
to find a way to stop the program from starting with Windows.

Next best way: Delete the program's shortcut from the Start menu's Startup
folder.

Third best way: Uninstall the program.

Least appealing way: Very carefully remove the program's entries in the
registry's 'Run' keys.

If the program in question is a virus, adware or spyware, none of the above
is likely to help.

Go to Kellys Korner-XP website and scroll down to item #148 read across to
the right and there is a registry script to disable unused entries in
msconfig. Of course, you do so at your own risk.. Kellys stuff is usually
always fine to run.......

In many many cases the ONLY way to remove them from the startup list is to
remove them from the run keys in the registry. That is not so difficult, scary
or life threatening. Why do yo make it sound so bad?.

An inexperienced user can easily make a mistake that could harm their
computer's stability. Editing the registry is something to be avoided,
unless really needed, and then approached carefully and after understanding
exactly what is to be done. Users should always backup their registry first
(by creating a restore point.)
