I have 2 teenagers and their friends who have
occaisionally downloaded games etc. from internet. We
have picked up unwanted spyware, etc. I wish to
uninstall. What are the basic necessities to leave
running in msconfig Startup for Windows XP?

download it check for updates when you open it up and run
it takes about 20 min.,will get rid of the spyware.Oh ya
it's FREE.

What's necessary depends on your hardware and software.
What you need to know is what each of the things in
your startup is for, then you can decide if YOU need
it.

If you have spyware on your system, msconfig probably
won't be enough to get rid of it. Ad-aware and/or
spybot-sd both do a good job. And both are a free
download.

Windows XP does not require any applications for startup. Everything is your choice. I recommend disabling all applications except your Firewall, Anti-Virus and your favorite applications at startup.

something to think about is antivirus,anything for your
a/v should also be checked,msconfig will not stop spyware
though you should think about something like ad-aware.If
you don't have an antivirus you can get one free from
microsofts web site at

Greetings Mindy,

I use AdAware, and run it about once a week (unless I've been on a lot
during that time) on each computer in our house (especially the kids).
Make sure you update it before you run it each time... that way it'll
work best. If you want to have AdAware run automatically, tho, you'll
have to pay for the Advanced version (I don't know the cost).

I also use AVG AntiVirus (www.grisoft.com), which is a free download
(for te Free version). I've been using it for almost 2 years, and
haven't had a problem with viruses since. They have released a new
version but it's a pay-for version... still, at about $35.00 for a 2
year plan, that's pretty good.
