Hi,
Somehow Apple Quicktime infected my computer and was running in the back
ground all the time. I un-installed it to get rid of it, because I can't
get msconfig to run. I was going to just uncheck it in there. This is a
new problem. It use to work fine.

So, I turned off the system restore points, rebooted about 10 times, got a
new version of msconfig.exe from microsoft's website, tried to run it, but
the same thing happens. It opens, and then closes in a second or two.

I couldn't find anything searching via google or yahoo excpet for a site
that said it knew how to fix it but it wanted auto debiting of a crdit card
at $10 a month to view the fix.

Does anybody have ideas on how to fix this or what caused it in the first
place, and how to prevent it form happening again.

The system is about 3 months old. Nothing fancy, just a normal xp box
running comcast broadband via a router.

TIA

Nothing to do with QT - I run it and have zero problems (contrary to popular
belief it is *NOT* spyware!). There are many viruses and spyware that will
cause these sorts of issues. Have you run a scan with an up-to-date AVP?
Have you downloaded and run Spybot (www.safer-networking.org)? If not,
suggest you do so.

You were right! It was a virus. Got a fix for it from Grisoft's website.

all good advice. thanks.

about quicktime. everytime I load it, it installs itself in my lower right
hand
corner thing whenever I turn on the computer. I only use it for my small
videos I take with my digital camera, so I don't want it running all the
time. It manages to always reload itself unless I uninstall it. I remember
having a version years ago that just worked like any other program on
my computer. It ran when I wanted it to, and when I closed it down
it stayed off.

Do you know where I can get an old version that works the way
I want it to? I searched around but couldn't find one.

thanks for your help,

alex

Simply uncheck it in the startup section of msconfig (which will be working
now you've dealt with the virus) - it's the 'qttask' entry. I've done that
and it no longer loads at start-up. AFAIK, you'd have to go a long time back
before you find one that didn't, so I wouldn't advise it as it wouldn't be
compatible with XP. It's called the systray (or these days the
'notification area').

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan

Symantec Security Check
