MSConfig & system utility tool questions

I have done a fresh install of Windows XP after doing hardware upgrade of
mobo, CPU and memory. It was rough going immediately thereafter, but I have
finally solved the issues causing BSOD's and system instability.
I have now gotten my PC back to where I intend to use it for some time in
the future, but I have a couple of issues which have me stumped.

I have used MSconfig before to stop stuff like WinZip & Quicktime from
running at Startup. I have saved the selective startup configuration, by
clicking on "apply". I restart the PC, the system configuration box comes
up, as it should, but when I click on the box to tell the configuration tool
not to run, it still does. I am not sure if this can be fixed or how to do
this, or if its worth the effort.

Another question is this.....I have any entry on startup that I noticed in
msconfig that I have never seen before called "dumprep 0 -u" . The full
entry is C:\Windows\system32\dumprep 0 -u". immediately thereafter, but I
have finally solved the issues causing BSOD's and system instability. Can
someone advise what this is
and should I be concerned about it.

Lastly, I would like to control some of the stuff running at startup. If I
get a utility like Startup Cop available at PCMag would I cause myself
problems by using such a utility because my PC is not cooperating using
selective startup via msconfig.

Thanks a lot.

D.

You will probably find it satisfactory to control such startups by editing
the registry entries

Run regedt32, and look at the entries at:

HKEY_Current_User/.... AND
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Removing the Values removes them from msconfig also.

hello mark,

i was wondering what
the sentence that refers
to QZ and notated under
your name means/implies...?

I use a real email address, but avoid spam by using a filter on the address.
If QZ is not included in the subject line of the email sent to my yahoo
account, it is deleted by the filter. This way, I need not see anything sent
by 'automatic' mailers. They can't tailor the subject line to each
recipient. A live person can. It's a 'password' needed to send me personal
mail.

that's interesting.
thanks,
