hi,
i have recently used the msconfig start up tab. i have 9 items on the list.
i have disabled;
winampa.exe,
cmesys.exe.,
qttask.exe,
chkfont.

i have another 5 on the list which are still on.

rundll32.exe.- which probably has to stay on
sp- regedit- probably has to stay on.
and 3 ms work ones.

switching the above 4 off, has sped up my pc a lot. i was wandering if i
could switch the 5 above off, to speed my computer up even more!! does
switching off any of these conflict with the actual operating system? can i
ruin any software? i know the winamp was the main one slowing my computer
down, and a can still run winamp even though it is off. i never use
quicktime, so thats ok. cmessys, is adware i think, so thats better off.

thanx

devin

Devin,
You can switch off any non-symantec...windows xp programs to load at start
up ( in the startup tab)
It is safe to prevent the start, but you may have problems with the startup
of programs as they will last longer to load after startup.
Rundll32 has to be on for many applications.
The three others are not supposed to be in the startup tab, are u sure that
they are there?
You can also switch off some services(be sure to activate the hide all
microsoft services) that you are not using, e.g from zone labs or from
macromedia.

Devin, what is important is system stability, if you want your computer to
go faster, increase Ram and don't prevent drivers and parts of registry to
load, it is preferable to have a good and strong system functionning well
whereas a very fast system but which breaks down very frequently.
You can also delete old files(old for about a week) from the prefetch folder
to increase speed and remove some of the display options( e.g uncheck the
windows skin, shadows and other effects...) to increase speed.

Here is a pretty comprehensive site for checking out various startup
items: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm

I would be especially suspicious of that regedit item - there is
absolutely zero need to run regedit as part of the startup; and doing
so is a favorite trick of certain viruses and also some brands of
advertising spyware.

Most msworks related startup items are totally dispensable as well,
such as the calendar reminders, unless you are actually using that
feature of msworks to remind you of birthdays and other coming events.

Good luck
