I used to have windows 98 and msaconfig could be used to not allow specific
programs from loading at startup...
With windows XP when i go to the startup and uncheck a specific startup
program (quick time) it defualts to selective startup. After it reboots,
it stays in selective stsrtup. If i select normal startup, then the quick
time is rechecked to start up automatically.
is this different or do i need to do something different?

No thats correct. Because by unselecting items are doing a
selective startup(you are only selecting certain things to
load).
2 things you can do:
1-leave it in selective startup
2-remove the items you unselect from startup(you can
usually do this from within the program itself(best way to
accomplish stopping the item from loading at startup) or
go to kellyscorner and she has a script to remove
unselected items(it works great Kelly!)-(sorry I dont have
the address or what line it is on off the top of my head).

As explained by another reply, this is normal. You have changed what's
allowed to run at startup so the behavior you're seeing is to be expected.

If for some reason, you want to leave these items available in MSCONFIG
(replace their check marks some time in the future), you can get rid of the
annoying nag that occurs at every startup. Check the box in the lower left
hand corner of that screen ("do not tell me again") and click OK. The
startup message will not appear until another change is made in MSCONFIG.
