msconfig - Can I delete unused entries?

I go into msconfig quite a bit to disable stuff I don't want to start
from starting, but I'm trying to find out if it's possible to delete
the items that I have unchecked from showing up. I don't want them to
be there, it just messes with my sometimes-way-too-perfectionist brain
of mine.

Remember, Msconfig was designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a
"startup configurer." Use MSConfig to determine the location of the
command that is attempting to start the program, and remove it. To
cease the selective startup notifications, either return your settings
to the way they were, or permanently remove the undesirable programs
from your startup configuration.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily in
the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

yeh,

you can use a freeware
by sysinternals called
autoruns.

you can download it
from microsoft.com

in autoruns:
when you find an entry
you don't want, simply
uncheck the line and
doubleclick the filename.

the registry will open up
and show you the entries
new state as being disabled.

however, the registry will
show you where those entries
can normally be found and deleted.

have fun!

ps: make a restore point
before modifing the registry.

Hi Ryan,
Somewhere on Kellys "tweaks" page their is a regedit that will remove the
unchecked entrys in msconfig. I'm at work now so I can't tell you exactly
what line it's on. (the computers here at work suck,browsing's a pita).

The link didn't work, so I used google and found the site at
kellys-korner-xp.com and found the tweak you mentioned. Worked great,
