I have a Windows XP system running Avast Virus protection. On boot-up no
viruses are detected and everything runs smoothly. However, after the
computer has been idle for some trime, Avast reports the Msblaster worm in a
file in the system restore folder. It is always the same file. Avast only
gives me the option to close, not delete.

It seems to me that the best way to rid myself of this virus is to delete
all the restore point on my system, the problem is that I am not sure how to
go about it. I have tried the Help system in windows withut any success.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Bill Wiilis.

Hi

To delete all the checkpoints - and virus - in System Restore:

Right click on My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore
tab. Enable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' - Apply>OK and then
reboot your PC. After that reboot, go back in System Restore and disable
'Turn off System Restore on all drives' - Apply>OK and reboot your PC a 2nd
time. System Restore will create a new checkpoint after this 2nd reboot and
would also have deleted the virus.

Windows ME and XP utilize a restore utility that backs up selected files
automatically to the C:\_Restore folder. This means that an infected file
could be stored there as a backup file, and VirusScan will be unable to
delete these files. You must disable the System Restore Utility to remove
the infected files from the C:\_Restore folder.

Disabling the System Restore Utility (Windows XP Users)

1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties.
2. Click on the System Restore tab.
3. Put a check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
4. Click the 'OK' button.
5. You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click Yes.

Note: To re-enable the Restore Utility, follow steps one to five and on step
three remove the check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
