I have attempted to install Defender several times and keep getting the error
'MSASCui.exe Oxc0000142 Application failed to initialize'. I am running
Windows XP and have all the latest updates.

I have tried installing Defender and then uninstalling it using the control
panel functions. I have also tried using the Windows Installer Cleanup
Facility. All of these attempts failed to remove the error.

I really want to use Defender - how can I get rid of this error

Hello Quarryman,

Please check the event log (Start->Run->Eventvwr.msc) for events from the
service control manager in the system lºg.

There should be an event in for the WinDefend service.

There's a little "copy" button in the event viewer when you select an event,
if you paste that here, we can probably help.

Hi Engel,

Thanks very much for your help. I reloaded and reran Defender this morning.
Looking in the Event Viewer I found nothing from WinDefender itself but did
find the following error at the time of trying to run Defender:

Type Date Time Source Category Event User Computer
Error 25/02/2007 8:23:43 AM Service Control Manager None 7022 N/A JOHN

From another separate attempt to cure the problem, I found that when I tried
to execute the command: regsvr32 wuauedng.dll I got the message
'initialization routine failed'

To see the details you need to double click on that event log line. That
will open the actual record, which will then present a button to cut and
paste the details to the clipboard, and then you can paste them into a
reply.

As far as I can see--this message indicates that the service control manager
sees a given service as hung. This can happen if the service is
unresponsive because, say, the CPU is pegged as this initialization is
happening.

You might consider this incantation:

Properties of My Computer (right click my computer and choose properties),
Automatic Update tab, Turn off Automatic updates.

Restart.

See whether the event occurs on that startup.

Go to Windows or Microsoft Update and do an express scan, and apply all
offered patches.

Go back to properties of My Computer, automatic update tab, and set it back
to automatic.
