MSASCui.exe and application failed to initialize:0X800106ba

At system start up or after exiting WD and restarting it from start programs

I get the following error:
application failed to initialize:0X800106ba. a problem caused windows
defender service to stop
to start the service,restart your computer or search help and support on how
to start a service manually.

It also creates and system event log:
The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

It looks like this program (MSASCui.exe) starts the WinDefend service,
however it fails instead.

I can start the service in dos, via "net start windefend" or thru admin
tools/services

Pls. help. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the WD twice, does not help.
 
RPC is enabled.

I can always start (and stop) the WD service from the dos prompt or the
services menu.

If I stop it and then try to start via run MSASCui.exe, it fails again,
same as it does on a system restart.

Again, I then do a "net start windefend" from dos and it starts.

Something is wrong when the MSASCui.exe program trys to start it.
 
I completed the step below including replacing the mshtml.dll step.
Reinstalled WD, same problem.

The MSASCui.exe does not want to start the WD service, but again, I started
it ok via "net start windefend" in dos.

Any other suggestions...

I do not think that worked for the gentleman. He is trying to get it to work
on W2k system.

I am running XP Pro, so I do not think I have a problem with GDI+.

Hello Rich,

i dont now if you find it already.
Els start REGEDIT and search for MSASCui.exe and look of the path is
right, search the whole because there are many items.
