Ran a scan and when it got to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Clsid\{big number} it just sat there.
The graphic continued but the count did not change.
Left it for about 10 minutes with no change.
Clicked the "Abort" button - Nothing.

Went to the "Tools" menu item (after about 2-3 minutes) and, when I clicked it, it came up
with a "Are you sure you want to abort" message.

Any ideas?

Generally, in a case where the item is identified, but not
properly removed, the next steps are:

1) update both Microsoft Antispyware and your antivirus
application.
2) restart in safe mode by pressing the F8 function key
before the first Windows screen appears at startup.
3) do full deep scans with Microsoft Antispyware. Repeat
scanning until a complete scan comes through clean. Ditto
with the antivirus.

This isn't guaranteed, but it works for a great many items
that at first appear not to be cleaned in normal mode.

Empty your IE cache and your other temporary file folders,
eg: c:\temp, c:\windows\temp or C:\Documents and
Settings\<name>\Local Settings\Temp (the path to your temp
folder will change depending on your name) - sometimes
programmes can be hidden in there - watch out for
mysterious *.exe files or *.dll files in those folders.

Open Internet Explorer
Select Tools > Internet Options
In the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete
Files button
Check Delete all offline content, and then click OK
Go to IE Tools, Internet Options, Temporary Internet Files
{Settings Button}, View Objects, Downloaded Program Files.
Check for unrecognised objects there.

If you are running SP2, open IE--->Tools--->Manage Add-
ons, and uncheck any BHO's that you don't recognize.
A BHO disabler such as BHO Cop, BHO Demon or BHOCaptor

And most importantly, when your problem is resolved, let
everyone know!!! Many people put a lot of time and effort
into helping. Let them know what suggestions worked.

Good luck

Its having problems removing some malware by the sound of
it, Possibly because its running on your system while you
are scanning , Try rebooting into safe mode and then scan
again and see if it completes the scan

Reboot and keep tapping F8 then choose safe mode from the
list

If the problem continues download and install Ewido
Security Suite and run that on a complete scan also in
safe mode to try remove the problem .

Let us know if that doesnt work and post the ewido scan
log if anything is detected

Possibly MSAS has hit a Registry key to which it does not have a Security
Permission to read under the account in which you are currently logged on.
Ensure that you are logged on under an Administrator account.

If it happens again, note down the exact registry key name, then, using
regedit (carefully!) check the Permissions on that key.

Thanks to all who replied.

Problematic key has disappeared today which, as happy as it makes me, also leaves me
wondering what it is a sign of.
I have a limited knowledge of the registry other than figuring that, among other things, it
is the replacement for things like the old ".ini" files.

Well guess I'll chalk it up to "one of those things".

Again, thanks.
