I have a chat program that uses the MSAgent to speak what is typed. If left
on for a couple of days, the \System32\config\System file is filled with
lots of entries for DirectSound. Once the file gets too large, over 10MB,
that prevents the OS from booting [arggg].

Short of not using the MSAgent, is there something I can do to prevent the
....\System file from getting filled?

I have a Creative Sound Blaster PCI sound card.

Hey, I know this is not your simple worm problem, but a real challange...
anyone up for the challange?

I really would like to 'hear' what is going on in my chat rooms. With
failing eyesight, it is getting harder to read all the time.

This reminds me of when I did support in chats on CompuServe. Because I was
operating on behalf of a company owning the forum-in-question, we had to
capture EVERYTHING and send 'em a monster text file every time we had a
support chat. The up side of this was that I didn't have to keep it any more,
and could erase it every time, after making a backup..

What are the entries for DirectSound you refer to? It would seem that you
need to flush the file every so often in order to avoid the bootup problem
happening. If there are more than the entries for DirectSound in the System
file, I don't know what to tell you beyond contacting the manufacturer of the
chat program, and see if they either have a patch to correct this problem, or
any suggestions as to how to safely flush the file.

HTH.
