MS06-042 (KB918899) was re-released on 24 Aug-06 (for some Windows versions)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918899
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-042.mspx

The re-released MS06-042 replaces hotfix 923762 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923762/) for WinXP SP1 and Win2K SP4.

Hotfix 923996 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923996/) remains available for WinXP SP2 or Win2K03 SP1 (only).

Updated. Re-enabled HTTP 1.1. Visited a few problem sites (not very
scientific).
Works for me.

I've been searching why I have to double click applets to activate, (ex:
click here to activate this control). Will this release of KB918899 stop this
behavior of double clicking applets on certain web pages? Thanks PA Bear!

I'm confused about whether or not to install the re-release of kb918899.
Some posters are saying that it only applies to WindowsXP SP1. However, this
MS page implies that it applies to SP2 also:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918899

Also, is it adviseable to uninstall the original 918899 before downloading
and installing the re-issued version?

Could be more clearly worded, indeed. This is from the MS page we've both
referenced:
APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
• Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0
• Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0

My own IE: Version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2 | Update Version SP2
You say: "MS06-042 was not re-released for any other Windows version (e.g.,
WinXP SP2)."
OK. That is clear enough. Is it assumed that it will be re-released for
those of us running WinXP SP2 at some future time?

I am having the problem of ie closing before it comes up completely too. I
am new here and went to find the hotfix 923762 for winxp sp2. I am running
ie 6.00.2900.2180. First I don't know how to find the download of the
hotfix and second how do I download it to the computer that needs it if I
can't get the browser to come up?

Thanks for your help

On my Win2K SP4 system I'm still getting random crashes (in
ntdll.dll, according to the crash reports) after applying the latest
918899. They're not as often as with the original patch, but
still enough of a nuisance to cause me to uninstall it.

923762 hotfix only addressed IE6 SP1 running in WinXP SP1 and Win2K SP4, and the hotfix was pulled when MS06-042 (918899) was
re-released for these two OSS on 24 Aug-06. IOW, neither the hotfix nor the re-released update apply to WinXP SP2.

Just want to post that I am having the same problem, despite
downloading the latest update. I'm using the same system.

Do the crashes stop if you uninstall 918899?

Installing the re-released patch seems to have lessened the frequency of IE
crashes, but not removed them entirely.

I'm a web developer/sysadm, developing geographical information systems.
I have only seen this bug on my sites that require a SVG plugin (Adobe SVG
Viewer 3.03).

For example,

http://kortportalen.dk/nmwebhotel/f...5&yMax=235296.734375&furl=&mapw=1100&maph=715

You can click on this 20 times or more and it's ok, then suddenly the
browser just closes down, no diagnostics.

I've seen this on:

6.0.2800.1106 (Windows 2000 SP4)
6.0.2900.2180 (Windows XP Professional SP2
6.0.3790.0 (Windows 2003 Server, no service pack)

Around about the same time (mid-august) another sporadic bug is appearing.
This is also only on sites displaying SVG. You get a pop-up box titled Script
Error, displaying:
Unknown error
Line: 193, column: 2
(the line number varies). This is a bit more frequent than the browser
crashing bug, but I suspect they may be related when they only happen in
conjunction with SVG.

Do the crashes stop if you uninstall 918899?

I was afraid to uninstall it because I got the message that some
programs may not function properly if I did. I uninstalled it last
night. So far I've had no crashes, although it had become more
intermittent, so the jury is still out.

However, IE still isn't working "right". I'm seeing red x's on some
pages rather than smilies or pictures; some sites are loading so much
slower, as the blue status bar takes forever to show the page has
completely loaded; on a couple sites I'm seeing the code and frames on
the site before it completely loads. All this has occurred since the
latest updates. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the "Use
HTTP 1.1"....not sure if I should have it checked or not at this
point. So today I'll pay attention to whether that makes a
difference.

So am I at greater risk now that I've uninstalled 918899? I've
resisted using a different browser because over 12 years of using IE,
I've been too lazy to learn a new one. Maybe it's time.
