MS Works

My husband's laptop came preloaded with Works. It died recently, may it rest
in peace. He backed up his files but I can't recover them intact in Word,
even using the converter. The text is there but formatting is a mess. I
downloaded the wp2krtf.exe file (Works 2000 converter for Word 97/2000) from
the MS site thinking that might work but the file opened in gibberish.
Question: Is there some way I can use the recovery disks that came with the
laptop to install only Works on my computer or do I just need to buy a Works
program? We'll buy another laptop when we figure out what we want, but in
looking at reviews, some don't appear to come with Works. BTW: Op system is
XP. Any suggestiong will be much appreciated.
 
You'll need to ask whomever you got the recovery disks from.

If the version of "Works" was older than 2000
you may have to do this

Thanks for all for your responses. I'll just buy a new inexpensive Works
program on eBay.

I find it amazing (but not surprising) that a newer MS word processing
program cannot convert data from an older program.

Though I am sure an Ebay purchase will not set you back much...

I just remembered that my gmail account has a built-in conversion
capabilities...

In other words if you emailed the documents to yourself as an
attachment...Gmail can convert them


Also, it's possible Open Office could convert the document

don't know for sure...but it's free!

The OP is trying to convert *Works* files with *Word*.

Look into free on-line file conversion services - I haven't used
them myself but I believe they can convert almost anything.

And in the future, save everything in the universal (and tiny)
format: TXT.
