I would be interested in the opinions of this group regarding the pros
and cons of MS Word vs Corel Word perfect.

Thanks,
Alan

Alan,

See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/WordVsWordPerfect.htm for some
highlighted differences.

See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/ for a Word primer.

As this is a Word newsgroup the responses might be biased. I like Word and
have long since deleted WordPerfect from my computer. Still there are
features in WordPerfect that I miss.

E-mail for additional help, within reason, if you like. I may not
always solve your problem, but no charge if I do. To e-mail, first edit
out the "w...spam" in the displayed address.

Ask this question in the WordPerfect newsgroup and you'll spark a heated
debate. I use both on a daily basis. WordPerfect is better at some things
and Word is better at others. If I had to pick one over the other, I'd pick
WordPerfect.

We're an organization of 400-500 employees, and we've used WordPerfect,
heavily, for 15 years. We're now being instructed by executive management
to transfer to Word only, and quickly. :(

Our education has lead us to believe that Word is equally as good as
WordPerfect (Word 2002). One very large advantage for us in changing is
that we will be able to deal better with documents created outside our
organization (and which were almost always in Word format which didn't
convert well to WordPerfect).

If you're trying to choose which to purchase for your organization, I
believe WordPerfect is much cheaper. If you need to produce PDF files from
your wp documents, the price difference is even more.

One person's opinion only: For relatively uncomplicated word processing
tasks, WP is, I think, preferable: shorter and easier learning curve.
Conceptually simpler to understand.

Word is *probably* better for more complex tasks as its tools seem to me
more adaptable. Unfortunately the learning curve, to me at least, is steep,
slippery and murky. I've put a lot of time into understanding Word--worth it
because I use it a lot, and am in an environment where most everybody else
does, too.

WP is a good bit cheaper. I always keep both programs installed.

Let me first of all declare my bias: I am longtime Wordperfect user
and I feel very comfortable with it. I certainly am not as familiar
with Word, therefore it is difficult, maybe even a bit unfair of me to
try to compare.

But I know that Word proponents will restore the balance so I will
stand up for the former king of the word processing jungle.

There is one major feature of Wordperfect that Word inexplicably does
not have: Reveal Code. If you have worked using Reveal Code, you may
find it very difficult to do without it. For me at least, it is the
single most important reason that keeps me from fully switching over
to Word. But if you are starting from scratch, it may not be that
important. You don't miss what you have never had.

If you chose Wordperfect, you will find yourself forced to convert
your document to Word when you need to send them to someone else
because the vast majority of people now use only Word. Not by choice,
mind you, but by circumstances created by Microsoft's enormous
influence.

So my advice would be to chose Word if you plan to send documents to
other users. If not, give Wordperfect a serious look and join the
select company of non conformists who do what they think is best, and
damn the torpedoes.

A.Z.
