With so little info--it's hard to help you more than this (and many people
wouldn't help you at all on the Word groups believe me):

This will help you:

Not preaching, but with a few areas in the Softie kingdom errors and
versions *can matter. WMP is one. Word and Office apps are others.

To get the best help with opening Word, always give the version 2003, 2007
ect. and try to repro the key words of and the number of the error. If you
don't have it and can't make it come up on the desktop by trying to open
Word, then try to open it and type eventvwr.msc in the run box>click
application>click the down error to look for errors with Word as source at
the time you had the error.

You can also try repairing it using Detect and Repair by accessing it in
Add/Remove Programs>click Office or Word if it's stand alone (and odds are
strong it isn't)

To perform a repair of Word or Office, follow these steps: 1. Close all
Microsoft Office programs, and turn off any antivirus software.
2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. NOTE:
In Windows XP, click Control Panel on the Start menu.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Click the Office or stand-alone version of Word that you have
installed, and then click Add/Remove.

For example, click Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Office 2000
Standard, Microsoft Office 2000 Premium, or Microsoft Office 2000
Professional.
5. After you enter the Setup program, click Repair Office (or Repair
Word).
The Setup program checks the installed files and replaces or installs any
files from an earlier version that are the wrong size, damaged, or missing.
After Setup is complete, restart Word normally (without using the /a
switch), and try to reproduce the problem.

If the problem is corrected, you may have identified the problem as being a
damaged or missing file.

You can always uninstall and reinstall but anytime you have a problem with
an Office app, it is best practice to run the Windows Installer Cleanup
Utility before uninstalling/reinstalling. This gets corrupted files, .dlls,
and reg strings out of the way of your getting a clean uinstall and install
the next time.

If this were a UAC issue, it should exhibit consistently anytime from any
location you try to open.

That's why they call some things bugs.

It would also, presumably, have a UAC caveat or somethng that connects it to
UAC unless it were a bug in that vein as well.

The version of word is what came with office XP 2003.. No error message just
does nothing .. I also noticed that access is exhibiting the same behavior
so is excel. Everything that installed with office XP
The start menu properties seem to have been changed as follows..
\\127.0.0.1\c$\@GMT-2006.07.03-02.37.01\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Programs
How do I change its path. It wont let me under properties? Thanks Alan

Is this on a Vista box? Have you run Detect and repair on Word? If so,
then uninstall Office and reinstall it after first removing all Office
component entries using the WICU

Alan Office XP 2003 does not exist. Office XP has components that are
called Word 2002, Excel 2002 ect.

Office 2003 has components that are called Word 2003 and Excel 2003.

I would go to eventvwr.msc in the run box as I already said several days ago
on this thread, and I would click on Application and look for errors
associated with Word or Office. A week ago I posted suggestions on June 30
and being a minimalist to the point of not saying what you'v done, we have
no idea what you've done. Additionally if this is on a Vista Box I would
normally run System File Checker but MSFT has warned in one brief notice
from the Product Manager of Win RE that SFC is still broken and can trash
the registry.

Have you tried system restore?
Have you tried Detect and Repair?

What have you tried Alan?

On June 30 I posted on your thread:
