how do i get my emails to be edited by word as i type? couldn't find the
option under tools.

There is no option to have a program edit as you compose a message.
There is an option in Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Programs,
to set the HTML editor.
This sets the program that is used to edit the source code of a Web page or
an HTML email.

Hi, Anna.

The spell-check feature has gone through several changes over the past year
or two. For one thing, Vista's Windows Mail - and now Windows Live Mail -
has its own built-in spell checker, so it no longer uses the one in Word.

Now I'm using WLM (beta version 12.0.1184); it immediately highlights and
underscores (in red) any word that it does not recognize, as soon as I press
the space bar to end the word. As before, I can control the spell-checker's
behavior by clicking Tools | Options | Spelling. (I've been using WLM for
only a couple of weeks and already am forgetting the details of how WM did
it.)

According to Microsoft, Windows Live Mail (WLM) is the replacement for WM.

In addition to WM's capabilities, WLM also has Hotmail access.
Several of WM's bugs have been fixed in the current version of WLM.

WLM also does RSS.
WLM is even less customizable than WM
WLM has separate folder sets for each POP3 account.

MS says they're starting to work on WinMail's problem with undeletable
messages.

About time.
Maybe they'll release the fix before the end of the year!
In its current condition, I can't recommend WM to anyone.

....and that option has been removed from Outlook 2007, as its only editor is
the Word 2007 rendering engine:

Outlook 2007 uses only Word as the e-mail editor

Since I switched from AVG to Avast I haven't had a single problem with
WinMail.
