I'm not sure this is the correct "community" to contact concerning an MS Word problem our office is having, but at least it's a start. (Microsoft won't let you contact them directly without an enormous fee.)

It's a document formattingn question -- if this is the WRONG place to start, please redirect me to somewhere else.

We have a number of lengthy -- 60+ pages -- documents which contain at least 3 levels of paragraphs/sections. The "levels" are created using the automatic numbering feature in Word, hence, they're just codes and not imbedded keystrokes. What we'd like to do is create a Table of Contents for these lengthy documents using either the "outlining" feature or the "styles" feature. We've played around with both, but have found that we cannot get the various items listed in the Table of Contents to retain their paragraph or section numbers/letters. We've marked the text we want to appear in the Table of Contents, and the typewritten material does, in fact, appear, all except the paragraph or section number or letter.

Is this something you could help us with, or is there another source we should go to?

Please respond.

The paragraph numbers need to be part of the Style to be included in the
ToC. See the following link where you will find two FAQs, one on applying
styles and another on creating a ToC.
