This problem started a few monts ago. It is a simple MS wired (through USB)
Scrolling Optical Mouse. It only works intermittently. I am using Vista
Business on my ThinkPad T61. Any suggestions.

Buy a new mouse. Wires are probably intermittently open.

My mouse works fine on the desktop computer at my local library. My
Thinkpad T61 laptop is new and all USB's work.

Tried the mouse on different ports?
Tried other devices on that same port?

Yes, I tried both of the things you suggest. I have also downloaded all the
latest drivers for my new ThinkPad T61 from Lenovo.

Try uninstalling it from Device Manager, then reboot and allow it to be
redetected. Do not detach it during these steps.

I tried that but the mouse still works intermittently. My pointing stick
always works. I have the track pad turned off because I can't stand that
thing.

Hi John,

Then it has to be some resident software interfering with it. I would look
at what's loading in your startup axis and selectively disable pieces until
the unwanted behavior stops. This would include disabling things like your
antivirus software (it is often the cause of quirky behavior).
