MS wired Intellimouse Optical question

I have a question I can't find an answer to.

I have 4 wired Microsoft Intellimouse Optical wheel mice. They are
installed on computers with Windows 98, Windows 2000 Pro and recently
Windows XP Pro operating systems.

In Win98 and Win2000 under the Mouse Properties Pointer Options tab there is
an Advanced button that lets you enable Pointer Acceleration. This button
is missing in Windows XP Pro. And, with a 24 inch Dell LCD monitor it's
needed. There's a lot of ground to cover when you are running AutoCAD.

I have tried the mouse with a USB connection and a PS/2 connection. The
result is the same.

Is this a quirk in WinXP or is there a driver later than version 5.2 for the
mouse?

I've also noticed that the buttons, etc. in XP Pro are flat and drab instead
of simulated 3d. MS sure did downgrade the GUI on this release.

Thanks for the input.

I checked and the native drivers didn't have the feature.

I checked the beta news web site out and found the IP5_4Eng.exe driver. I
uninstalled the 5.2 driver and installed the new one. I had the same
result, no accelerator key. I checked the properties and the new driver was
there.

I think XP just doesn't like the wired mouse any more than I like the
wireless ones.

Oh well... Some MS programmer was out to lunch on that one.

Thanks again.

Ron

Let me give a heads up to anyone using AutoCAD or ADT.

Don't install these later versions (v5.2, v5.4, etc.) if you want your
middle button to function as it did with ver.4.1. It won't! Stay with
version 4.1 that comes with the mouse. You can set mbuttonpan to <0>,
modify your acad.mnu, acad.mns, adt.mnu and adt.mns files until the cows
come home and you can't get the osnap menu to pop up. You're back to the
old 2 button mouse shift>right click to get them.

And, if you install a later version, you'd better know how to use your
keyboard to navigate Windows when you uninstall the hardware and software to
get back to installing ver.4.1.

I'll repeat, some MS programmer was out to lunch on this one.
