Can I backup over the ethernet lan from a 2000 Server A to a 2000 Pro
Workstation B?

The Help for Windows 2000 Backup says an external storage device must be
cabled directly to the computer performing the backup.

I can manually run an MS backup to a UNC drive but if I try to schedule it,
I get media not found?

How would I "cable directly" another pc to receive the backup from the
server. What kind of cable would work and how would that be done?

Steve,
The reference to an external storage device directly
cabled to the computer should not refer to another
computer, but to an storage device like a tape drive, hard
disk, jazz drive, etc. Anyway the only limitation on this
respect, refers to saving the System State Data
(registry, boot files, etc, that are saved checking the
System State on the backup tree) which must be saved
locally on the machine. This means that the backup program
must run locally on the machine where the State Data is to
be saved.
If you can run a backup to a network path manually, but
not by schedule, make sure that the user account under
which the scheduled job runs has permission to write to
that location (use your user account if this one works
when saving manually.) You don´t need any special cabling
for this, just a running ethernet network.

Hope this helps,
Robert

I do this every night. Map a network drive, then backup to the mapped drive.
Delete the mapping when done.
