Has anyone gotten a router to work with a MS VPN
connection? PLEASE tell me which brand and model
number. I've tried two Linksys routers (one with built-
in VPN but yikes! what a nightmare to set up) but neither
will work. I want to use my laptop when I travel to
access my office network. Sounds simple, right? WRONG!
The laptop will have to use a dial-up IPS for internet
access most of the time, then connect via VPN to the
office network. If anyone has any suggestions, I'll
dance at your next wedding and send expensive gifts.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Deedra-

When you state "...a router to work with a MS VPN connection?" What exactly
do you mean? Are you trying to configure the VPN on the actual router or
just having problems connecting to the VPN?

I have a site in Las Vegas that we use the MS VPN (PPTP) with and it works
fine. At my home in Utah I use Comcast and have a Netgear Router/Firewall,
and recently Cox replaced the router down there so I'm not aware of what it
is. But it doesn't matter, what matters is that the proper ports for PPTP
are open on the firewall, so that when I initiate the connection the traffic
is allowed through to the server.

Basically what you will need is a public IP address pointed to your VPN
server and the proper ports for PPTP open for this IP address. Then once
your laptop is connected to the Internet you will just need to point to that
public IP address and be authenticated.

Don't know what your office router is, but if you are using a Cisco, you
could purchase their VPN client and with the proper IOS and configuration
you would be able to connect to your office from any computer that had
Internet connection as long as you have a public address for your site. We
have 4 sites running the Cisco solution and it works great.

Good luck, hope atleast some of the information I provided worked.

Jacen,
Thanks for the reply. I started with a Linksys BEFSR41.
Tried to connect from a laptop with a dial-up connection
then via Microsoft VPN client but couldn't get it to
work. Tried forwarding ports, etc. MS support suggested
getting a new router since it didn't look like that
router supported VPN. Bought a Linksys BEFVP41 router
and can't get the IPsec settings to work. I think the
problem there is that I don't have a static IP address
with the laptop since I have to dial in. Microsoft
Support said they couldn't help me as configuring IPsec
was "outside their scope of support". Linksys says that
IPsec is a Microsoft problem so they won't help me. I am
curious if anyone has gotten the MS VPN client to connect
and work with a router. I've looked at other discussion
forums and the suggestions have been to use another VPN
IPsec client. I'm at a standstill and still don't have a
working connection. I'd like to know what others have
gotten to work.
