anyone try this yet? you first have to add all the IIS6 pieces, but even
after the install you get TONS of permissions problems when trying to get to
the website. anyone see this and have a fix?

UAC will cause you probs.

You will need to run IE as Admin.

I am running VS2005 R2 with no probs, as admin.

what about as "AN" admin... would running as the actual Administrator
account make a difference?

The OP asked about Virtual Server, not VPC. VS 2005 R2 does work, but you
have to run a separate instance of IE with elevated rights to access the
admin website.

can you elaborate on this? what do you mean by separate instance? as opposed
to... what other instance??
and since im logged on as an admin, how much more elevated can it run? i
have all IE settings tweaked to allow what i need to allow

If you have IE already open and try to access the website you will get a new
tab and no opportunity to run elevated. In order to run IE elevated you
need to do so by right clicking on the IE icon and running elevated.

You don't need to run IE with admin privledges.

To use the Virtual Server web site without running IE "as
administrator". There are two steps involved:

1. Explicitly grant your user account administrative privilege for
Virtual Server.

To do this select Server Properties from the Virtual Server section of
the navigation pane on the Virtual Server web site (you will need to
run IE "as administrator" in order to do this). Then select Virtual
Server security, Add entry, and create a new entry for your user
account with full control. You need to do this because the UAC
feature of Windows Vista stops Virtual Server from being able to
detect that you're a member of the administrators group, unless you're
running IE "as administrator".

2. Add the Virtual Server web site to your trusted websites.

To do this press the Alt key while running Internet Explorer, open the
Tools menu and select Internet Options. Then change to the Security
tab and select the Trusted sites icon. Click on the Sites button and
add the URL for your Virtual Server web site to the trusted sites.

It does work, but as the other posters have said it's not
straightforward to set up.

I have UAC disabled (doesn't everyone?) and I ha dto install virtually
every component of IIS6. But once done, it seems to work okay. I
didn't have to set up any elevated IE instances, probably because I
have UAC disabled.

I've been ruuning Vista x64 for a month now, and I've only encountered
one blue screen - and it was caused by the VS2005 driver (VMM.sys???).
That's with about 15 VPC images.

Thanks Steve! That works, but I had to also change:
Tools, Internet Options, Security, select Trusted Sites, click Custom
level...
scroll down to User Authentication
under Logon, select the Automatic logon with current user name and password

to avoid the prompt for credentials.

This is Vista Ultimate RTM in a Windows Server 2003 R2 Domain while logged
on with a Domain user account that is NOT in the local Administrators group.

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
