MS updates my machine?

I have SP4

I use Firefox as a browser, Xnews as newsreader.

Never use IE, upgraded default 5.0 to 6.0, never use Outlook Express, etc.

This morning had a internet problem, could dialup, not see anything. It
turned out to be my ISP had a problem, but the tech said to update my IE
5.0 to 6 as "MS can send updates or setting changes all the time and you
are not aware of it".

First, on DUN that seems unlikely. And I do no automatic upgrades on
anything.

Also, I understand W2K does not have the MS data interface that default XP
has, Isn't W2K secure against that?

Advice?

I asked the above question- unsolicitated MS contact from the internet.
Nothing about how to update.

ms

MS does not send updates or anything else via IE (other than via MS update)
The only 'contact' that MS might have is via WGA tool

Thanks, I thought that was the case. Even in W98SE, that never had a
problem.
