MS Update kills MS IE7

I have my month old computer with windows vista home premium. On 12th of
February 2008 I run Microsoft update to update my computer like I have done
for years with no problems. I install all 38mb of the 11 new recommended
Microsoft updates. IE7 will not connect to Internet. I get "Internet
Explorer cannot display web page". I used IE7 right before I did update
and it worked fine. I rolled back the updates through windows system
restore and IE7 worked fine. It is the windows update that caused the
problem.

I installed the updates again for security and sure enough IE7 does not
work. I use firefox for now but I like IE7 better and want it back.

How do I get IE7 to work? Will Microsoft have a fix? The big question is
is everyone else having the same trouble after they update vista?

What do I do to get IE7 to work with the latest vista updates?

Thanks for the help

Bob

The only way to find out which is the troublesome update is to install them
one at a time.
Then hold off from installing the rotten one until such time as you read of
a fix here.

I've got to the stage that I don't do updates on the 2nd Tuesday anymore.
I wait to see what probs occur.

I have exactly the same problem and sent a request to Microsoft yesterday for
a solution.
I believe it is something to do with the firewall but I will post the reply
here when I receive it

That is good advice. I have five short questions for you.
Is microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_maintenance the place to go to
find out problems with updates?
Where else do I go to find out problems with updates?
Is 2nd Tuesday the only day to avoid updates or should I avoid all updates
for a time?
What is your waiting time before you believe it is safe to install an
update?
What other update advice do you have?
Thanks for your service

Just to point out that this is not a universal problem. The same updates
didn't stop my IE7 from working at all. It suggests that something else
which is installed in your systems is also implicated in the problem with
IE7, not just one of the MS updates on its own.

Bob,

For update discussions go to microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Hi Bob,

One of February's updates was a cumulative security update for IE7. This
included a new executable version of IEXPLORE.EXE and, in some cases, this
can prevent connecting to the Web. There is actually nothing wrong with this
update. What you need to do is to check your internet security and firewall
settings and grant this program access to the Internet. There is a new
version of this program most months and it is possible that you may have to
repeat this each time.

Sorry for shouting but THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! it worked!!!!!!
Shut off norton firewall and turned on windows firewall - That worked!!!!!!

Glad to know I'm not alone. Having same problem with IE7. Glad yours is fixed
but I'm not sure what to do. I dont have Norton. Any advice would be great.

I have the exact same problem. Every-time I update Vista IE7 says that is can
not connect to the internet even though the Network connection is working and
I can download patches through the OS. I have not tried the Windows Firewall
yet, but I will. Hopefully that helps. I do not run Norton, so I'm not sure
what could be interfering with the update.

MS auto updates cone out on the 2nd tuesday of the month, not the 14th and
15th.
Look for something else!
