After a fresh install of XP, I go to windows Update to get
the critical updates. It goes through a timely download
and then seems to freeze on the install portion. after a
period of time I get a message that the process failed. I
have tried to download both groups, and individual parts
of the update. Same result. A couple were successful,
most fail. Any suggestions? Or am I still paying for the
ghosts of WindowsME. This fresh install was a full
version of XP on a new hard drive.

Thanks Carey, but I went through that proceedure yesterday
with no luck. Could I have purchased a bad XP disk?

Since you did a fresh install you have none of the updates that have
corrected this problem. The usual cause was a defective (Corrupt)
catroot2 file. The solution was to find and rename the file to anything
you choose such as catrootold. Then reboot and download and install. A
new catroot2 file will be generated. Also one of the updates will
correct the cause of the corruption of the catroot2 file.
