i changed my CDdrive, on an XP SP2 system and here is Windows with the
Genuine blue star asking me to activate windows again! and guess what the
local MS team asks me? the invoice for the newly installed component ! not in
a million years, why? this is private. suppose i bought it used, and from a
friend, hence no invoice... what happens then? MS won't let me change my
hardware? My hardware is my property.

besides, if MS can detect hardware changes and send them through the web,
why can't they detect that this is NOT a piracy kind of thing?

thanks in advance for a quick solution

lucky you,
you probably don't have an OEM version... maybe you have XP Pro corporate.

i understand that activation stuff and protection and all... but treating
your clients like ****, nah, this is NOT a way to do business.

and where does that leave the self-building PC users... indeed MS should
clearly mention that any change to your Hardware can affect you, so at least
you get prepared in advance.

1. What is the "local MS team"?

2. I change hardware more often than most and I have not seen your
problem. And yes, I build all of my computers from scratch.

If you did get this message, just activate your system again. If you can't
do it over the internet, use the phone option.

Or are you speaking of "validation", as in WGA?

Hi Richard,
thks for your reply:

1. Beirut Microsoft.

2. i have an OEM product: when i called MS support this morning, they asked
me to send them the invoice of my newly purchased Driver and they would
contact MS in US and ask them a new key. i'm talking about a new key, this is
a genuine. the blue star says "activate this copy of windows".

put aside the privacy thing - sending the invoice to total strangers, etc -
i actually got this drive from an older PC and cannot digest that local MS
won't hel p me with this matter.... you know what they said? if you were a
business, we would have contacted your tech team, but for individuals, sorry,
we need proof. what further proof does MS need, other than the updated done
on this machine, via teh web? man MS updates can even detect if you hardware
drivers needs updating, cant they detect that i'm not re-installing a
motherboard, or ... you know?

don't know how much help i can get from MS over the web, but still crossing
fingers

thks a lot,
regards

It might have been worthwhile dealing direct with Microsoft
instead of through its local office. Isn't there a toll-free
number that can be used for telephonic activation? Of course,
tbe call might not be that free from your part of the world but
it certainly avoids the intrusion of local curiosity.

hi GhostRider
you know, i just might call MS in Belgium or France, 2morrow morning...
am going curious where this "episode" will end...

is this forum monitored by anyone from MS anyway?
cheers

like it was suggested earlier, just try to activate it online if you
can. although i must say that this kind of an issue has never happenned
to me before and I have changed my hardware around many times. goodluck

thanks to MS & one of their helpful team, i received the new ID and
re-activation was done. i have to say that talking to them about the privacy
policy (they had requested to show them the invoice of my new disc drive) and
that i know my rights and my duties helped a lot.

thanks to you all for your help, cheers
