Every compression / decompression I have found fails when compressing a
MySql back up file.

Compressions works fine, decompression gives no errors, but the decompressed
file fails to restore to MySql. The error given on restor is 'Invalid
character set used'

Anyone else found this, have a work around?

Compressing and decompressing should create an exact binary copy of the
original.

Are you reading the file as text before compressing it?
