Using Win XP's Backup utility, one is supposed to be able to pick the
folders and files to restore, but I have not been able to figure out how to
get the tree structure which allows one to pick folders and files, though I
can do a complete restore of a backup.

Thanks, CMA

Hi Jeff:
Thanks for the MS reference.
It says "Select the check boxes for the folders that you want to restore. If
you want to be more specific in your selections, double-click the folder
that you want, and then select the check boxes for the files or folders that
you want to restore."
But it does not tell you how to get the tree so you can select check boxes
for the folders and files you want to restore. That is my problem.
Cheers, CMA

And this is what it says BEFORE 5.;

How to Restore Files and Folders
NOTE: You must have permissions as an administrator or a backup operator on your computer to restore files and folders. Also, backup operators and administrators can back up and restore encrypted files and folders without decrypting the files or folders.
1.. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Backup. The Backup or Restore Wizard starts.
2.. Click Advanced Mode.
3.. Click the Restore and Manage Media tab.
4.. Use one of the following steps:
a.. If you want to restore from a backup file, expand File, and then expand the backup file that you want. For example, expand Backup.bkf created 01/01/2002 at 1:15 PM. Backup includes the date and time of the backup as part of the file name by default.
b.. If you want to restore from a tape backup, expand the tape device that you want (for example, Travan), and then expand the media name that you want. For example, expand Media created 01/01/2002 1:15 PM.
Read 4. specifically.

Hi Mr. tee,

Nothing there about how to get the tree. That is the problem.
I have done everything in the lists, but no tree with folders and files.

I finally solved it with your help.
"mrtee" <hingelickeratnew.rr.com> wrote in message
I saw your new post in a different NG so I now know that you are using XP
pro.

"I just now created a .bkf file of my C drive. Went to the "restore and
manage media" tab. Then I clicked the + sign in front of file, clicked the
+ sign in front of the created file, placed a checkmark in the box for the C
drive,"

So far so good. But for the next step, I clicked on the letter "C" and
that opened up the tree.
Thanks for your terrific assistance.
CMA

clicked the + sign and the tree appeared in the left and right panes. There
were checkmarks already placed in front of all items, meaning all would be
replaced, the marks would need to be removed from the items not requiring
replacement. I cleared that checkmark and checked the 2nd C and no items
were checked.

What items are you really trying to backup that might need replacement using
this method? There may be better programs available to obtain the desired
results.
