After we tried to upgrade from Window 98 (Ist Edition) to
discover you can not, and it takes Windows 98 2nd Edition
to upgrade to Windows 2000 Pro, the following problem
exists.
When I open any Microsoft product, I. E. Outlook, MS Word,
etc., a screen will appear indicating Windows 2000
Professional XP is installing a program. If I let it run,
it will ask for a a CD to finish the installation. If you
click on cancel when the program installation box appears,
the actual program you're trying to open will do so
allowing access and the ability to work in that program.
Now, since we tried to install Windows 2000 Professional,
my Norton Anti-Virus scan will not complete a full system
scan. It stops on the following temp-file(s) and remains
there simply looking like it is scanning but doing
nothing. (8 hrs on one scan) I don't want to delete the
temp files if they mean something to the rest of my
system, but, I believe it does have something to do with
my problem.
The virus scan stops at the first temp file:
C:\Windows\Temp\_ISTMP0.dir 8.3 Meg 68 files 0
folders
C:\Windows\Temp\_ISTMP1.dir 0 KB
0 1
C:\Windows\Temp\_ISTMP2.dir 528 KB 8 1
C:\Windows\Temp\_ISTMP3.dir 109 KB 5 1
C:\Windows\Temp\_ISTMP4.dir 109 KB 5 1
C:\Windows\Temp\_ISTMP5.dir 109 KB 5 1
C:\Windows\Temp\_ISTMP6.dir 109 KB 5 1
C:\Windows\Temp\_ISTMP7.dir 109 KB 5 1
C:\Windows\Temp\_ISTMP8.dir 109 KB 5 1

{4e087038-2d94-4e61-9fSb-77e3b62ea97e} 0 KB 0 Files 0
Folders
I also have the following temp's I have no idea what they
go to:
pft50F2~TMP 26.1 Megs 116 Files 19 Folders ??
pft23A5~TMP 0 KB 0 Files ) Folders
I have updated (regularly) my virus definitions and
checked to see if these files were associated with a virus
which they appear not do so, although, my system appeared
to have slowed down and doesn't respond well to MS
products. When I try to use my data bases that print in MS
Word, they go through the same system as described above,
although after printing, it closes the data base
automatically making me re-access it at data base log-in
fees. Not cost effective.
I ran the program to delete all temp files through the
*.temp,*.chk,~*.* this deleted about 165 temp files, some
of which were 8.2 megs in size. The above files did not
delete and my problem still exists. It appears the above
temp files have something to do with installation assuming
the IST may be the initials of installation.
When Norton locks up at the above temp files and I try to
close it, I get the following error message:
NAVW32 caused an invalid page fault in
module MSVCRT.DLL at 017f:7800d011.
