I feel sure M.S. Paint (still supplied with Vista) used to have some picture
special effects including canvas effect

Am i wrong?

MS paint is pretty basic. I'm not sure whether Paint.NET (www.getpaint.net)
would do what you require.

Not Paint...maybe you had an old version of
Picture It.

The freeware IrfanView has some effects and
it can also use Adobe 8BF Filters...

I don't like the gimp. I'm a long time Photoshop user and find the gimp
awkward and its multipane UI clunky. Again, that's my opinion but the price
is right.

paint.net is good and the new version is due soon. This product has a nice
plug-in model. I recommend it.

Thanks osu9400 for your recommendation. I do have a copy of Paint.net on my
Windows xp virtual machine but haven't actually got round to using it yet. I
usually use Photoshop, but if it is simply a screenshot that simply need
re-sizing I can do that from within an application called Snagit.
