This is caused by having the wrong keyboard layout option. From what you
describe, it appears that you have the 'English (United States)' keyboard
layout installed. To correct this, you will need to set this option to
'English (United Kingdom)'. Before you do this, you might need to check and
temporarily change the passwords on your accounts so that you are able to log
in with the other keyboard layout. To change keyboard layout, do the
following. Click on the start orb and type 'regional and language options'
into the search box. In the 'Programs' area of the results panel, select this
option. Next, select the 'Keyboards and Languages' tab. On this page, click
'Change keyboards...'. This brings up the 'Text Services and Input Languages'
dialogue panel. Under the 'Installed services' section you will see the
keyboard layout(s) that you currently have installed. If 'English (United
Kingdom)' is not installed, then click on 'Add..'. Browse the list that
appears, select the required option and click 'OK' to return to the previous
dialogue page. Next, under the section headed 'Default input language',
select 'English (United Kingdom) - United Kingdom'. You can then remove all
other keyboard layouts (except for this one) from the 'Installed services'
section. Click 'OK' and close all dialogue boxes when you have finished. You
will need to restart your machine at this point, and you should be prepared
to repeat this procedure for each account on your machine. Finally, if you
have temporarily changed your passwords, you should reset them.
