Hi,

I was hoping to find some help. I'm trying to fix a friends computer. From
the Desktop, all the icons appear to be MS Office Icons (even though they
are shortcuts to other programs), the standard Icons are all missing (My
Computer, My Documents, etc.)

The big problem though is Word will not start. It hangs on the splash
screen, and will not respond.

The machine in Windows ME, I did a virus scan and it came up clean.

IE and Outlook Express all work fine. I've uninstalled and re-installed
Word, and most recently re-installed the OS.

Thanks for any help,

Brian

It's likely that it's two unrelated problems.

Sometimes the icon cache gets confused and wrong icons are displayed. To fix rebuild the icon cache.

Start - Settings - Control Panel - Display - Appearance - and change Icon Size to something else (31 is 1 less), click Apply, change it back.

Try typing this in Start - Run and see if Word starts

winword /a

Thanks,

I will try both tonight.

The Icons seem to be there, the flash correctly for a moment, then it
appears as if the MS Office Icon (New Office Document) is right on top of
the correct one. On some you can even see a corner of the correct icon.

Thanks,

Word now starts, but that is the only way.

What could be the underlying problem?

Thanks,

Brian

Thank you very much.

That fixed the problem...I remember doing this on my machine about 5 years
ago.

Thanks again,

Brian

And the icons?

winword /a starts word without any saved settings. Therefore either your
normal.dot is corrupt or the settings saved in the registry are.

A corrupt normal.dot is the more likely. (just got a bit puzzled here
couldn't find it or it's folder where it lives on my machine - then I
remembered I don't have office installed at the moment - wait till I get the
path from an old post)

Type into start run
"%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates"

Rename Normal.dot. Start word normally. What happens now?
