MS Office - Help files not working

Hello --- I am using Microsoft Office 2000. I use Excel and Word. My
problem is that when I click on the HELP key --- the HELP index or the Office
Assistant does not work. I get a prompt to the effect that the program is
creating an initial index. It shows a little book icon -- writing goes
across the pages of the book and the pages turn. Nothing ever happens. The
program hangs. I do not have the help function. Also when I make an error
in Excel, the program tries to bring up the help -- it doesn't work and so
the program hangs. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office but it
does not help. Thank you for any help you can give me.
